Race #10 - Ditzler 150
The CART Series made their 10th stop of 1979 at the Trenton Speedway, in Trenton, New Jersey, for the Ditzler 150.

Unser's stay up front would last eleven laps before he was passed by Wally Dallenbach as he would battle all race long with Tom Sneva but it would be pit strategy that would determine who would win.

Race #11 - California 500
The CART Series made their 11th stop of 1979 at the Ontario Motor Speedway, in Ontario, California, for the inaugural California 500.
A packed crowd filled the Ontario Motor Speedway as the CART Series made their debut as points leader Rick Mears led the field to the green but it would be Bobby Unser who would make history by leading the first lap. Unser's day would last only twenty two laps before mechanical would end his day. Much of the race was a great showing as wrecks, broken dreams and broken cars would be the story of the day as ten cautions and ten drivers would drop out due to the intense heat, causing motors to break.
Al Unser would take the lead late after Rick Mears was pinned one lap down, however due to the rash of cautions, Mears was able to get his lap back and with fifteen laps to go, Mears made his move, taking the lead after the final restart and would hold off Mario Andretti to score the historic win.

Race #12 - Gould Grand Prix
The CART Series made their 12th stop of 1979 at the Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, Michigan, for the Gould Grand Prix.
A packed crowd was on hand at the Michigan International Speedway as the CART Series made their third stop of the season at the two mile track as the championship was close to being wrapped up with two races to go. Spike Gehlhausen would lead the field to the Green Flag but it would be fellow front row starter Wally Dallenbach who would get a run going down the backstretch who would lead the first two laps. With a wide space of track to race on, drivers began to spread out and for the most part raced single file as the race length had drivers planning on what type of strategy to use when it came to pit stops.
Tom Sneva would give up the lead to Johnny Rutherford then points leader Rick Mears as Rutherford's team decided to gamble, going with two left side tires and fuel, a gamble that would put him out front by nearly a second over Tom Sneva. Over the final thirty laps, Sneva did everything he could to get the lead back, but it was not enough as Johnny Rutherford would hold on for his first career CART Series win.
Other Noticeables: Johnny Rutherford scored his 1st win of the year, Rutherford led 2 times for 34 laps, including the final 32 laps, It was the 1st win of his career in the CART Series in his 12th start, Rick Mears, who finished 5th, kept his points lead, leading Gordon Johncock by 1,785 points

The CART Series made their 13th stop of 1979 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, in Hampton, Georgia, for the Rich's Atlanta Classic.
A packed crowd was on hand at the Atlanta Motor Speedway as the CART Series made their third stop of the season at the two mile track as the championship was close to being wrapped up with one race to go Rick Mears has an over one thousand point lead and a good finish would seal the deal on the championship one race early. The sixteen drivers on hand put on one of the best showings in CART Series history with a lead change happening almost every single lap but for the third race in a row, it would be pit strategy that would decide who would win.
With nothing to lose, Rick Mears's team decided to go with fuel and left side tires only and he would pass Gordon Johncock with thirty five laps to go and would pace himself with Johncock trying everything he could to get around his championship rival but it would not be enough as Mears took the Checkered Flag for the fifth time in 1979 and more importantly locked up the championship.
