The Indy Racing League made their 4th stop of 1997 at the Phoenix International Raceway, in Avondale, Arizona, for the Phoenix 200.
Rookie Sam Schmidt led the field to the green and would lead the first lap but it was Tony Stewart who would take over the lead on Lap 2 but during a pit stop his crew didn't put on a lug nut, allowing for new challengers to rise to the top of the pylon. Both Jim Guthrie and Marco Greco would take over the top spot but Greco would win out and began to lap the field losing the lead during the last round of pit stops to Stephan Gregoire who actually had won this race a year earlier. However Greco would take only six laps to retake his lead and once back out front no one could catch him and Greco would score his first career win.

Race #5 - Indianapolis 500
The Indy Racing League made their 5th stop of 1997 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in Speedway, Indiana, for the Indianapolis 500.
Buddy Lazier led the field to the green for the second year in a row and much like the race one year earlier, this was a wreckfest of a race as broken dreams and wrecked cars was the main storyline of the day. Lazier would lead much of the first half of the event but being swept up in two cautions damaged his car and left him unable to challenge for the lead handing the lead over to rookie Jeff Ward who lead for much of the remaining hundred laps but on his tail was Tony Stewart who took over and lead as well and with ten laps to go it appeared Stewart was on his way to a win until the 21st and final caution came out, setting up a shootout for the win.
With the green back out, Ward quickly took the lead back as him and Stewart slugged it out and raced side-by-side to the line as Ward beat out Stewart in the closest finish in IRL history for his first career win.
Other Noticeables: Jeff Ward scored his 1st win of the year, Ward led 7 times for 75 laps, including the final 6 laps, It was the 1st win of his career in the Indy Racing League in his 2nd start, Billy Boat(4th), Vincenzo Sospiri(6th), Robbie Groff(9th), Claude Bourbonnais(19th), Steve Kinser(23rd), Dennis Vitolo(24th) and Greg Ray(31st) made their Indy Racing League debuts, Marco Greco, who finished 12th, kept his points lead, leading Buzz Calkins by 18 points

Roberto Guerrero led the field to the green as for the first time in the Indy Racing League series drivers raced at the Texas Motor Speedway. Race #7 - Samsonite 200
The Indy Racing League made their 7th stop of 1997 at the Pikes Peak International Raceway, in Fountain, Colorado, for the inaugural Samsonite 200.
Billy Boat led the field to the green picking right where he left off at Texas, but for the second race in a row it was Tony Stewart who would lead the first lap. Stewart would show the power of his John Menard owned car as drivers raced at Pikes Peak Raceway for the first time in series history as drivers tip-toed through the race to try and understand which allowed Stewart to pull away until he was tapped by a lap car and spun out bringing out the first caution. Stewart would rebound and would only lose the lead during the final round of pit stops and Stewart would go on to score a dominating win by leading all but two laps.
Other Noticeables: Tony Stewart scored his 1st win of the year, Stewart led 2 times for 198 laps, including the final 47 laps, It was the 2nd win of his career in the Indy Racing League and his first since 1996 at Walt Disney World; 9 races ago, Jimmy Kite, who finished 19th, made his Indy Racing League debut, Marco Greco, who finished 16th, kept his points lead, leading Buzz Calkins by 4 points
