Gordon Johncock took over the lead and appeared on his way to a win when he too had bad luck happen as his Camshaft broke while leading, handing the lead over to Bobby Unser. Race #7 - AB Dick Tony Bettenhausen 200
The CART Series made their 7th stop of 1981 at the Milwaukee Mile, in West Allis, Wisconsin, for the AB Dick Tony Bettenhausen 200.
Al Unser led a field of twenty six drivers to the green flag and would lead the first lap before Johnny Rutherford took over, but his stay up front would be brief as well as defending race winner and current points leader Rick Mears took the lead before he was passed by Tom Sneva, who would pull away from the rest of the field, leading for almost a hundred laps, only to lose the lead during the final pit stops to Al Unser. Having not scored a win in nearly two years, Al wasn't about to let this one slip out of his hands, as despite a late race caution, he was able to get a great jump on the restart and held off Josele Garza for his first win since 1979.
