Race #2 - CART Qualifier
The IROC Series made their 2nd stop of 1980 at the Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, Michigan for the CART Qualifier.
USAC star Johnny Rutherford led the field to the Green Flag and he would lead the first four laps as a field of eight drivers battled to see who would advance in the next round. Rutherford's stay up front would be brief before first Bobby Unser would leave briefly before CART star Rick Mears would drive his way up into the lead. Having won the CART Championship, Mears was looking to continue his success in the IROC Series but hot on his tail was Bobby Unser, who himself was looking to make history.
Bobby Unser would drive around Mears on Lap 18 and from that point on he was on defense, blocking all over the track to keep drivers behind him and Unser's strategy would pay off as he would score a narrow win over Johnny Rutherford, his first win in over three years, and more importantly, Bobby Unser broke a three way tie and now has the most wins in IROC Series history.

The IROC Series made their 3rd stop of 1980 at the Riverside International Raceway, in Riverside, California for the Road Racing Qualifier.
FIA star and defending race winner Mario Andretti led the field to the Green Flag and would pick up where he left off in 1979, leading the first lap, however Andretti's lead would last only one lap before Emerson Fittipaldi would drive past and took over the lead. Much like with most Riverside races, the racing was lackluster and the drivers were spread out by lap ten and with Fittipaldi's lead up to nearly ten seconds by lap fifteen, it appeared yet another dominating win.
However Fittipaldi began to slow before making an unscheduled pit stop due to a flat tire, handing the lead back over to Andretti. With his closest challenger out of contention, Andretti would easily go on and would win for the second year in a row at Riverside.
