Race #15 - Gamecock 200The NASCAR Grand National East Series made their 15th and final stop of 1972 at the Columbia Speedway, in Cayce, South Carolina, for the Gamecock 200. Bobby Isaac led the field to the green flag in front of a sell out crowd for the final race of the season, as Isaac would lead for the first twenty six laps before he was passed by championship contender Elmo Langley, who would have a early battle with fellow championship contender Neil Castles, until Castles would drop out after suffering a mechanical problem. With Castles out of the race, Langley would be unchallenged, leading for 99 of the event's 200 laps, but in the final laps, his car began to slow, allowing for Bobby Allison to pass him with twelve laps to go. Langley would be forced to come to pit road and replace a flat tire, losing two laps, while Allison would cruise on to score his third win of 1972. Finishing in 9th place, Jimmy Vaughn scored enough points to win the 1972 NASCAR Grand National East Series Championship.
